In Professor Laurence J. Walsh's title Preventive Dentistry, a series of eight patients is presented.
Each of the cases highlights the importance of medical and lifestyle factors in oral health. A common theme with these Cases is a past failure to adequately identify and prioritise treatment issues for the patient, in particular a failure to address the factors responsible for deterioation of the patient's dentition. Past treatment has focussed on restorative rather than preventive measures.
For each patient, the contribution of general health and lifestyle factors is assessed, and recommendations made for in-surgery preventive procedures and home care programs.
The cases treated are as follows:
Case 1: Sensitive teeth and halitosis.
Case 2: Toothache in a patient with a complex medical history.
Case 3: Poor aesthetics of front teeth and sensitivity.
Case 4: Tooth wear and recurrent decay.
Case 5: Dry mouth and taste dysfunction.
Case 6: Anterior teeth, sensitive and breaking away.
Case 7: Post-chemo/radio therapy dental problems.
Case 8: Severe breakdown of dentition.
A range of clinical images and details are presented to outline each case.
