Orofacial Pain

What the Patient is Telling You Part 1

Dentil Volume 2

Clinicians are called upon to diagnose facial pain on a daily basis. For the most part, diagnosis is a routine procedure, which is accomplished without too much difficulty. Most painful conditions follow certain predictable patterns and exhibit specific signs and symptoms, which when observed, make diagnosis a relatively easy task to perform. Patients do present, however, for whom diagnosis is extremely difficult and where pain patterns do not follow recognised norms. Many of these difficult cases can have unsatisfactory outcomes for both patients and for practitioners.

There are numerous textbooks that deal with pain diagnosis. Most of these provide a comprehensive review of the signs, symptoms and pathology associated with the various conditions that can cause facial pain. Few, if any, deal specifically with the actual diagnosis of facial pain and none deal in any detail with the specific questions and tests that are required to establish a diagnosis for each condition.

This publication by Dr Alex Moule, made up of a 123-page book and CD-ROM, addresses some of the difficulties in assessing patients with facial pain, not by describing the various painful conditions, but by addressing the questions that need to be asked and by analysing the responses to these questions. This title should be regarded as a working document to be read, adjusted and added to as new patients present themselves over the years.
